Who We Are

The CLR is a non-profit, non-governmental organisation (NGO) located in Pune, India. We have been working in early childhood care and development, early childhood education and elementary education since 1984 in Maharashtra and other states in India.

As a technical support organisation, we provide, on request, a variety of inputs to government agencies, NGOs and CSR departments within corporates involved in the following programmes for socially and economically disadvantaged children and youth.

  • Early childhood care and development
  • Pre-school education (balwadis, anganwadis)
  • Elementary schools
  • Educational programmes that support children outside school
  • English courses for post-secondary youth

We also work with NGOs towards raising public awareness about the development and educational needs of less privileged children, and their right to holistic care and a good education.

Our Goal

The expansion of education in India has often not been matched by a similar concern for the quality of teaching and learning. This has resulted in unacceptably low levels of learning. The main goal of the CLR is to improve the quality of early childhood care and development, early childhood education and elementary education that less privileged children receive in urban and rural India. While our work now extends to post-secondary youth, an allied goal is to augment research-based evidence related to effective interventions in these fields.

Our Approach

Action-Research

The CLR is one of the few institutions in our country which attempts to meet the developmental and educational needs of varied age-groups from infants and elementary school students to post-secondary youth.

We identify important areas of work where new initiatives are needed, and conduct our own action-research projects in the field in order to learn from them, as well as to gain evidence of what works or doesn't work. Through this experiential approach, we develop the technical inputs and services that we offer to organisations that request our assistance.

Technical Support Services

The CLR designs and delivers, on request, a range of technical support services in varied cultural contexts.

We do not conduct set training programmes or "refresher" courses for teachers and trainers. Instead, we first enter into a dialogue with the organisation that is requesting assistance, in order to assess its needs. Inputs are carefully planned after mutual discussion, to suit the needs of the specific field-based programme the organisation is implementing. Our training is participatory, addressing itself to actual problems in the field. Our trainers invite feedback from participants between recurrent sessions, and adapt the content according to such feedback.

The materials we design are based on the needs of varying educational programmes, and incorporate feedback based on the experience of teachers in the classroom. In designing these materials, as well as in the developmental aspects of all our activities, we keep in mind their wider diffusion and application.

Working with Government

Local and state governments in India are the main implementers of programmes for the education and development of socially and economically disadvantaged children. Many of our projects therefore involve close collaboration with ongoing large-scale government programmes – pre-schools, schools, teachers and teacher trainers – to improve the quality of teaching and learning.

Our Philosophy

We believe that every child has a right to develop to her/his full potential.

We believe that quality care and the education of poor children must receive special attention, and that parents and teachers are central to this process.

We believe that the education of young children must engage their imagination, broaden their minds, and equip them with functional and life skills which go beyond the narrow confines of mere academic achievement.

We believe that every teacher is capable of creating a relevant learning environment for children, if she / he is helped to acquire the necessary knowledge, attitudes and skills, and to reflect on her/his work.

We believe that this learning environment can be created only if the existing educational system is made more accountable and transparent.

We believe that the enormous institutional and attitudinal barriers posed by class, caste and gender in our country can be overcome, if concerned individuals, organizations and government agencies work in partnership to fulfill the right to education for all our children.

Our Beneficiaries

The principal beneficiaries of CLR activities are less privileged urban and rural children in the birth-14 years age-group, and to a more limited extent post-secondary youth. The CLR serves them mainly through the adults who care for them, and those who are involved directly or indirectly in their education, including :

  • Elementary school teachers and instructors in supplementary education programmes
  • Balwadi and anganwadi workers (pre-school teachers) and other field personnel in programmes for early childhood care and development
  • Teacher trainers and supervisory personnel
  • Parents and other caregivers
  • Development and community workers

The CLR Team

We have a team of professional staff with considerable experience in teaching, teacher development and in designing teaching-learning and training materials for early childhood care and development, early childhood education and elementary education. Our professional staff is assisted by an adequate team of support staff. We take on additional staff and resource personnel for projects as required.

Our Legal Status

The Centre For Learning Resources (CLR) is the sole non-profit educational institution of The Society For Educational Improvement And Innovation (SEII). The SEII is the legal body registered as a society under the Indian Societies Registration Act of 1860, and registered as a public trust under the Bombay Public Trust Act of 1950. It is legally allowed to receive foreign funds as it is also registered under the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) of 1976. Donations to the SEII from Indian organisations and citizens are tax-exempt under Section 80-G of the Income Tax Act.

How You Can Help

The CLR invites individuals and organisations interested in supporting it's activities to:

  • Build up its Corpus Fund, the base on which continuity is possible
  • Provide core funding
  • Fund specific projects
  • Assist in regular fund-raising

All donations should be made to The Society For Educational Improvement And Innovation (SEII), which is the registered body legally allowed to receive Indian and foreign funds. The SEII can receive foreign funds as it is registered under the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) of 1976. Donations to the SEII from Indian organisations and citizens are tax-exempt under Section 80-G of the Income Tax Act.

The CLR began with a vision – to work with individuals and organizations struggling to enhance the development of children in disadvantaged communities, and to fulfil their right to a good education.
